Acting As Defence Counsel for Ex-Minister Syed Saddiq in Criminal Proceedings

Wei Jiet is part of YB Syed Saddiq’s defence team in his criminal trial, which commenced on 21st June 2022 at the Kuala Lumpur High Court before Judicial Commissioner Dato’ Azhar bin Abdul Hamid.

The ex-Minister of Youth & Sports and Member of Parliament for Muar is facing 4 charges.

The first charge relates to criminal breach of trust (Section 405 of the Penal Code). Syed Saddiq was alleged to have abetted the Treasurer of Armada to withdraw RM1,000,000 from Armada’s official bank account in breach of Bersatu’s Constitution.

The second charge relates to dishonest misappropriation of property (Section 403 of the Penal Code). Syed Saddiq was alleged to have misappropriated RM120,000 which were collected in the fundraising campaign leading up to his candidacy as a Member of Parliament for Muar in the 14th General Elections.

The last third & fourth charges relate offences under the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001, whereby the said RM120,000 was alleged to be laundered when it was transferred to his other personal bank account.

Syed Saddiq had pleaded not guilty to the 4 charges. He is also alleging these charges were politically motivated & amounts to political persecution. 

The defence team is comprised of Gobind Singh Deo, Ambiga Sreenevasan, Haijan Omar, Lim Wei Jiet, Ho Cheng En & Sharifah Alawiah.
